At the last “Meet & Greet” held in May by Pentacle’s Help Desk LA, which we have been part of for the past 2 years, I met Shyamala Moorty of the Post Natyam Collective. We talked about our respective companies and how they both were working with collaborative companies that lived long distances from each other. It was a great conversation that led to an invitation. On June 28th I was invited by local members of the Network for Ensemble Theaters (NET) to do a short presentation for the Latina Dance Theater Project at their local meeting in Los Angeles. Five companies from LA, San Francisco and Portland gave presentations about their companies. The thrust of NET is theaters that are working and creating in a collaborative method whether locally or long distance. LDTP fits this mode to a T!
Their vision is this:
“The Network of Ensemble Theaters (NET) is the coalition of North America’s permanent ensemble companies committed to preserving and passing on the legacy of the ensemble theater movement. The companies making up the NET include some of the most prestigious and vital ensembles in the United States as well as new ensembles that will inherit and reinvent this movement.
NET works to support, strengthen and sustain artists and ensemble through our programs, which include: Ensembles ABC’s, a series of professional development offerings designed for ensembles and small companies; National and Regional Festivals and Gatherings that connect the field together and explore pressing issues; Touring and Exchange support, to share the work with one another, while building new audiences; Knowledge Building/Sharing to document successful field practices, disseminating information broadly; and Advocacy to local, regional and national policy makers to illuminate issues and needs specific to the ensemble sector.”
It was great for me to connect and dialogue with other companies that are dealing with similar challenges and rewards. I feel that we have been somewhat isolated because of our method of working especially with the long distances that we have dealt with for the last 10 years. It was great to hear of other companies and how they deal with the ups and downs of this non-traditional method of working.
As a result of this invitation I believe that LDTP will excitedly join Network of Ensemble Theaters!
More to come…
